Yesterday I decided to take a walk to Mikrolimano, in Faliro and I had planned to end my walk at SEF Basketball Stadium of “Peace and Friendship” and Olympiakos Stadium “Karaiskakis”. I had almost 3 years to walk though the cafe and past the bridge to the Delta of Faliron and I must say it was a shocking experience. The economic crisis since 2008 has hit hard every aspect of our life and economy. Thriving businesses are dying or have already died. That was the case here.

NAI cafe was a massive cafe/restaurant next to the sea that was a place to meet enjoy the sun and sea and have a great time. It would operate from early in the morning till late in the evening.

NAI CAFE past

The massive structure was in total ruins, everything was striped to the bone, broken glasses dangerously spread everywhere and it looked as a definite public hazard.I decided to enter the building from the back since from the front all three entrances where filled with massive dangerous pieces of glass. As I was ready to enter I heard noises from the inside of the building.I wont lie,I was troubled and backed up a few steps. That moment a middle aged Greek emerged from the inside of the building he had strips of metal and cables in his hands.I understood that he was Stripping metal to sell it in the junk yards. “Don’t Worry carry on your work!” I told him casually. He went to the side to lay the metal with the other material he had already collected and vanished to the side of the building. I proceeded carefully to the once glamorous cafe. Everything was tron down ,metal ,glass cables and rumble everywhere. I took a few shots. The thing that hit me is that there were signs of human presence. I then proceeded to the second flour again I took a few shots of the inner area and of the bay in front of the decayed building.

I then went towards the OLYMPIC FARE, It seemed abandoned I took a few shots of the front and side and again I could hear people moving things inside. There I used film which hasn’t been processed yet. Finally I reached the “OLYMPICO Cafe”, another trademark of Faliro and Piraeus, a high profile cafe/restaurant with great interior design and stunning view. Again here the situation was no good ,Everything was stripped but the peripheral glass walls was there, the inside was again empty and destroyed. Again here I was using film. As I was ready to enter the building I saw clothes hanged to dry in the inside and I didn’t take the chance top enter alone.

The overall experience was depressing. There was a feeling of a parallel world of suffering that was absent from the news. I felt really sad because I had good memories from these places and I was angry that public property that we paid and still pay is destroyed this way. Also the human drama that is hidden in the shadows, I fell that is not going to get any better or find resolution in the near future.

Here are the Photos of the present condition.
